I think there's quite some room for debate on whether self-conscious human thought is entirely deterministic, even though the rest of the universe (and many of the factors influencing any human thought) obviously is.
There is something a lot more comforting about the idea that it's not being controlled by a brutal fuckup of a god, as Christianity asserts, because then we're all victims of intentional malice, instead of practically unpredictable circumstance. What's the point of football if God intended for the Green Bay Packers to lose that game? What's the point of living if God knows precisely when he's going to kill you with cancer?
