What makes this "cause" any less important than any other? The whole "cause" as you put it is one that we share surely? If not then your site is very poorly named.
As for getting over myself.... you're a mod. You're not a god.
So, wait you think consistently applying the rules is Draconian but giving the mods discretion over the rules is better? The less subjectivity it takes to run a site, the better. Otherwise, you'd probably be banned already.
And if your whole online activism thing is ruined by one site not allowing your content, perahps you should re-think your approach.
