I think you're right. They'll silently tolerate you in their presence to appear "moderate" and then they'll slate you in their own minds. I have a Muslim associate and I remember him telling me how "wrong" it was to drink alcohol. I'm not telling him I'm gay, I know to my face he'll be ok but I don't want to know what he's thinking.
