Oh, I'd love that one. I always love it when reality comes calling with a good slap to the face.
It is the same no matter what xenophobia a parent fears their child coming out as. My biological family besides my sister are all right wing fundies afraid of every non fundy. They ran into their first atheist, when I found them as an adult, then my younger sister left religion and is now an atheist, it confounds them now knowing they have two godless heathens in their family.
It's even worse for those in the east who suddenly decide the majority they live under isn't the utopia they were indoctrinated with.
I think it is safe for me to say on average, most sane atheists I know don't disown family or friends solely on one belief or claim. I did cut off my older fundy brother, not because he believes, but because he sucked the life out of me every time I was around him. Everything was evil to him, everything was doomsday to him.
My adoptive mom is still Catholic but nowhere near dogmatic. She is my biggest supporter, and still helps me out at my age. I can have very honest conversations with her without her taking it personally. She knows the difference between objecting to the logic of a claim, and a personal attack. Unfortunately most humans confuse claims with being all of them as if the claim were their physical blood and physical DNA.
