RE: German constitutional court allows the heardscarves in public schools

I went to both private and public schools, and I don't recall being able to wear anything on my head---such as a hat---in either of them. I would say if the rule already leans toward a policy such as that, which doesn't allow other types of headgear, then headscarves shouldn't be excepted; the religious point is moot, but to add to what others have said I don't think that the state has an interest in seeing any religion promoted in the dress of students or teachers whose business is conducted at the expense of public funds, and where a code of attire is already expected to be enforced. I've made the point elsewhere but the state has no interest in endorsing any religion---whether it can boast of a long historical tradition or has popular support---and since religion is not defined by anything other than a person's irrational whims, anyone can claim special treatment on account of whatever they wish to call sacred. Once you allow one, you cannot deny others.
