A portmanteau, in language, is a word made of parts of two words, where both the parts and the meanings of each word are preserved in the new word: spork is a portmanteau of spoon and fork, and the word describes a utensil which has elements of both. Likewise, brunch is a combination of breakfast and lunch, and is a meal between the normal hours of each antecedent, often featuring dishes typical of both.
