No they're not rare, eilonnwy. You only believe that they're rare because to acknowledge that they are everywhere is to go against your addiction/brainwashing-fuelled point of view. "If smoking is so non-adictive, why don't you quit?" is a typical addict's question. It presupposes that smoking is addictive. But if it was, I wouldn't have been able to go without for 2 and a half years with no cravings whatsoever. The reason why I smoke now is because I like it. Besides, if what I say is not to be believed, then you have no reason to ask me the question in the first place.

You say that my opinion doesn't matter, and then when it suits you you ask me a question which allows you to attempt to make the point that I'm an addict because I still smoke, while ignoring the very fact that an addiction would have made it extremely hard to go without for such a long period.
