Superconducting Super Collider was cancelled in tightening budgetary environment of early post Cold War recession essentially to protect funding for NASA's international space station. It wasn't publically so stated at the time, but I understand that was the behind the scene trade off. ISS was judged essential for survival of NASA, because Cold War military funding shell game had left NASA essentially a one trick pony. That trick - the space shuttle - and by extension the pony, can only be justified if it served a crewed space station.
