If there is a genuine correlation, it could just as easily be that people with serious character flaws are drawn to religion in the first place.
But really, the more religious someone is, the more they believe in their doctrines (for the big religions anyway) the more they must think I'm unworthy and am going to be punished just for "refusing to believe" while giving me no good reason that I should believe.
