All it took was one short conversation to screw it up. Apparently there was no programming. All the snake had to do was point out what the apple actually did, and the fact that it wouldn't directly kill them, and Eve ate it. She didn't go discuss this new information with Adam or Yahweh. She just went ahead and did it. Adam did the same. It's a rediculous story meant to explain unexplainable things, and doesn't make sense if taken literally. But it kind of needs to be taken literally for the Jesus story to work.
