That is indeed the claim by apologists, but it ain't. Intelligent design is a religious doctrine ,unsupported by evidence. Is based on an old and soundly refuted argument for the existence God.Viz teleological ,or argument from design
Evolution is an established scientific theory supported by evidence. There is not now nor has there ever been any controversy or debate, except within the minds of members the lunatic fringe of theists.

Quote:A teleological argument, or argument from design[1][2][3], is an argument for the existence of God or a creator based on perceived evidence of order, purpose, design, or direction — or some combination of these — in nature. The word "teleological" is derived from the Greek word telos, meaning "end" or "purpose". Teleology is the supposition that there is purpose or directive principle in the works and processes of nature. Immanuel Kant called this argument the Physico–theological proof[4].

One of the great things about scienctific theoeis is their power to predict based on known inputs. And this isn't just academic but has real practical application. Evolutionary theory is used in managing farming practices to enhance resistance or prevent too high a genetic load on a species by trying to force enhanced breeds, predict length of transitions, predict pouplation growths etc. If ID were true what would you do with this information, pray to aliens or gods for crops to become more resistant?
