Why is eating meat a step backward but eating plants is not?  Is God not manifest in all things, plants no less than animals?

....We also need some veggies and in this case we cause some pain and suffering but we have to remember that
old saying.......NO BRAIN NO PAIN.
We can not live without causing some pain to plants but as far as we keep the pain to a minimum we do our very best.
I grow some veggies in my garden and when i need some i always cut the outer leaves so the plant keep alive and the suffering is kept at a minimum.
Animals on the other hand have a developed consciousness and when killed the pain is million times more that the pain that a plant would suffer so we really 
got to look at the damage in both quantity and as far consciousness is concern.   

A smaller step backwards is still a step backwards. Why does our need justify the plant's pain?
