Yeah, if you're going to play as England, go for the islands. To be fair, I choose rivals that have some bonus or unit that also has to do with the water. Actually I often try to make rivals that have something to do with the faction. Like the kind of civilizations that would realistically be around me.
Whenever I choose Alexander, I always make sure Attila is in the game too. Bitter enemies to the end, I say!
In Civ 3, I think it was China that has military and production, so that was a good warmongering civ. Babylon was the religious and science civ. I kind of liked Shaka's military and expansion layout. Their spear unit could move as much as horsemen, so they were a problem in the ancient age.
I think I played someone else's Civ 2 for a bit, decided to get Civ 3 for myself, moved on to other things when Civ 4 came out, then bought Civ 5 for my Steam library.
