Yes, because we are inside the universe and don't have the perspective from outside as diagram depicted. The 'flat pancake' has 4 dim's so viewing from the inside may give a sphere perspective.

OK, so how far out in the void from the universe would you have to go to see the universe as a flat object?  Is it possible that gravity has several independent and discrete properties?

The 2 dimensional depiction of the accelerating universe shows a ‘void’ (*blue background, reposted.) which is non-existent to our senses or instrumentations since it is non-dimensional or extra-dimensional, and not part of the universe; therefore we can’t view the universe’s geometrical shape. The galaxies are located on the 4 dimensional cosmic surface. Perhaps an analogy for perspective: If sea creatures never saw above the water's surface, they wouldn’t ever see the ‘flatness’ of the surface.

Advance life needed a flat universe so that the universe last long enough for stars to spew-out heavy elements needed for advanced life; and expands slow enough so that gravity can form galaxies rather than neutron stars.
