Is it possible that gravity has several independent and discrete properties? The 2 dimensional depiction of the accelerating universe shows a ‘void’ (*blue background, reposted.) which is non-existent to our senses or instrumentations since it is non-dimensional or extra-dimensional, and not part of the universe; therefore we can’t view the universe’s geometrical shape. The galaxies are located on the 4 dimensional cosmic surface. Perhaps an analogy for perspective: If sea creatures never saw above the water's surface, they wouldn’t ever see the ‘flatness’ of the surface.

Advance life needed a flat universe so that the universe last long enough for stars to spew-out heavy elements needed for advanced life; and expands slow enough so that gravity can form galaxies rather than neutron stars.
In that connection, This quote from - The Grand Design - “Were it not for a series of starting coincidences in seems, human and similar life-forms would never have come into being.”*

So in which direction is the universe flat? Where's its top surface?
