Oh, I agree that any idiot who fails to secure a gun that is fired by a child should be prosecuted. No question there. What I doubt is the "transferability" of the lesson. The "it can't happen to me" mentality is strong with gun nuts.
But somewhere back in this thread is a video about what happens when kids find a gun. Even after they just have had a class about "leave it and go find an adult" they invariably pick it up. One of the most distressing things they do is look down the barrel.
