See, I think the comic book fad is a symptom of what I was referring to. The reason production companies want to make comic book movies is not just because they're popular, but because they have the potential to become a franchise. They can pump sequel after sequel using the same characters, and people will go to see it. Besides, catering to nerds is a cash cow. We part with out money quite easily.
And no, it isn't blowing over any time soon. Both Marvel and DC's movie companies have long term strategies of releasing many movies. Here is just Marvel's list of slated releases.
