Absolutely against it, under any circumstances.

The main crux of this admittedly hardline view is essentially this; Once a life is taken by the state, it has been brought down to the same level as those it has executed. One of the main responsibilities of a truly civilised society is to set an example for others to follow, and by endorsing death as a punishment for a crime, that society becomes implicit in murder.

In my view, the very act of resisting the moblike urge to kill those who commit the worst crimes sends a message, that being; we are better than this, and we are better than those who committed this act.

The death penalty does not work as a deterrent, it never has. It serves no practical purpose apart from a fleeting and ultimately hollow sense of satisfaction gleaned by those that bay for blood. It cannot be reversed in cases where the condemned has been proven to be innocent after the fact. And it speaks volumes about a society that would rather end the lives of criminals permanently than make any efforts towards their rehabilitation.
