I said to my friend "I hope we're not forced to pray". To which (suprisingly, as this guy is quite intelligent usually) he said, "Atheists pray anyway so what's wrong". This really annoyed me. I started to explain to him how Atheism is a lack of belief in a God and how praying is apparently talking to God, then Atheists can't talk to something that they don't believe in. Then obviously he started to attack me (verbally) with stuff like "praying isn't religious" or "atheists pray out of respect". I mean I just got so fucking pissed at this guy. He held onto his claim ever since even after telling him the dictionary definition of Atheism.
I might be wrong on this which I don't think I am but please write your response to this anyway.
Thanks.
I don't know about atheists praying exactly but I think praying, OCD rituals, primitive superstitious behaviour and things like this are all interlinked and I do think I have a kneejerk primitive reaction in me that causes me to do certain things. It's very rarely anything that you would notice as being praying.
With me it's things like I like to park in the same place outside work because it might give me bad luck if I do something different, Sometimes I do say under my breath "Please god no." But I don't do these things out of respect and I do think praying is religious. It's stupid, usually ineffective and linked with OCD I think, socially acceptable OCD.
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.
