I'm no big fan of Kurt Cobain's playing, or vocal technique, but goddamn, when that boy sang, I knew he wasn't trying to impress me with his technique, he was trying to exorcise himself.
There are metal/shred musicians who can communicate feelings effectively -- Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson come to mind immediately -- but too many musicians chase technical brilliance without understanding that the only purpose of technique is to serve the emotions that the song delivers.
Cobain's technique worked because when your emotions are raw, your technique need not be refined.
