You get it, brotha. You get it.
I'm no big fan of Kurt Cobain's playing, or vocal technique, but goddamn, when that boy sang, I knew he wasn't trying to impress me with his technique, he was trying to exorcise himself.
There are metal/shred musicians who can communicate feelings effectively -- Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson come to mind immediately -- but too many musicians chase technical brilliance without understanding that the only purpose of technique is to serve the emotions that the song delivers.
Cobain's technique worked because when your emotions are raw, your technique need not be refined.

Those three for sure, and I'd add some Led Zeppelin (Black Dog for example), and Slayer (though for me, Metallica was the sweet spot). Okay, since I just typed it, I have to listen to it now.

The Iommi guitar work on "Lonely is the word" from Heaven and Hell" would be the one tune I'd take with me on a desert Island. Page, Blackmore, Iommi and Hendrix are the demigods for their era.
The rest are just really, real good.

Slayer too, yes. The riff to "Reign in Blood" is up there with "Paranoid" or "Master of Puppets", no doubt.
Zep made great heavy rock, too.

Sooo... No one seems to have mentioned this yet:

The music on both songs started out pretty good until Alvin and the Chipmunks started squeaking out the lyrics. In the second song, I thought the koto or whataever that first instrument was had some real promise. . . for about 3 seconds.

Bahahaha I thought that was pretty rad for a second. *batman voice* "Give me chocolate." It would have been better if they even attempted to incorporate some metal vocals, or even content.
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:
"I don't hang around with mostly men because I'm gay. It's because men are better than women. Better trained, better equipped...better. Just better! I'm not gay."
For context, this is the previous verse:
"Hi Jesus" -robvalue

Everybody's a bit different and the lines are often blurred. I wouldn't consider Van Halen metal. I consider them hard rock along with Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Guns N' Roses.
As far as Metallica is concerned, here's my take on the Big 4: Megadeth, Testament, Overkill, Death Angel. This doesn't mean I don't like Metallica.
I also can't think 'heavy metal' without upping the irons.

I just wanted to point out that the wikipedia link on Metal is a great read. There are some great bands/songs mentioned there that I've never heard before, or even heard OF. Worth a read:

I don't know, man. Overkill is a bit too King Diamond for me. I'd take them out in favor of Metallica any day.
