It's still a big deal to Christians, not being able to get an erection is grounds to be forbidden to marry.
Women didn't proclaim purity back then, it was expected and if they were thought lacking...Well they wouldn't enjoy the result. Didn't die of then either, plenty off Irish girls got chucked into the Magdalene Laundries just for being pretty or kissing a boy.
