Seems risky, like putting all your eggs in one basket. Better to have all existing nations so closely allied that they have the peace and order of world government without that risk.
Even if the world government was democratic and genuinely represented the opinion of the global population that wouldn't always be good. Most of the world isn't as accepting of homosexuality/women's rights/Human rights as the west.
Besides most people only say they like unity, they don't actually want it because they feel it takes something away from them personally. Just look at how unpopular strong central government is.
