They're Muslims in the general meaning of the word. They just aren't in another sense of the word (truly submitting to the path God has chosen for them).
With all due respect, that's incredibly convenient. The fallacy retroactively redefines what a "real Muslim" is in an attempt to protect the ingroup from criticism. IOW, it's a continual moving of the goal post to protect your belief set from criticism, as opposed to simply admitting how poisonous and dangerous extremism in religion (including Islam) can be.
Wouldn't it be better to take extremists head on instead of making excuses to separate yourself via semantics? Don't complain about the crazy people Islam breeds, fix it.
