In western countries today the average start for puberty for girls is age 11, which is down from around ages 14-16 back in the 19th century. I assuming girls in 7th century Arabia started puberty around age 15-16. Therefore Aisha (if she existed) would have probably appeared way younger than what a typical nine or ten year old girl today.
Child marriage and legally being able to have sex with children has never been just restricted to the Islamic world, it was acceptable even in Western countries as late as the 19th century. To give an example to shame Christians, Mary the mother of Jesus was likely around age 13 or 14 when she was betrothed to Joseph.
Should I be embarrassed that my own great grandma was married at 13?
