Considering Jews were the first to spread their religion by military force what criteria are you using for "bad." Is giving Christians and Muslims bad ideas something good?
The entire idea of having a list of do's and don'ts for which the penalty is death is found only in very backwards places and Judea.
The only way I can see "less bad" is for lack of opportunity.

Which is rather ironic considering the fact that they only have the OT to go by...
But if you honestly read it the list of rituals and taboos for which the penalty is summary execution on the word of a priest would certainly have been the envy of Stalin's police state and political officers.

There are only religious Jews. Those who claim to be Jews but not observant are a political invention of Zionism, as in The Invention of the Jewish People.
