Even outside the issue of religion, no, I don't think the private sector should be promoting consuming just to consume. Our current climate is creating more pollution and more of a unsustainable pay gap.
I write poetry, so far I have not made a dime off of it. I would like to be able to pay my bills with it, but I also not in it for the money. There are plenty of ways to contribute to humanity and titles and paychecks are only ONE aspect of a society.
And no, I do not want to see the word "atheist" turned into a political party or a religion or even to be used as either an Ayn Rand or Che economic model. It merely means "off" and should not be treated as a group mentality.
The way to "compete" is to use our own voices, and if you manage to make a living doing it, that is fine, but it should not be the selfish reason you do it, it should be providing humanity with truth outside the issue of profits or political or religious ideology.
