China doesn't want a trade war. Just like NK doesn't want a nuclear war. They rely on the US being the 'adult' of the situation that says "Well now, this is bad for everyone. So we'll back down." With nuclear tensions high, Trump called Kim's dick small on twitter.
From China's perspective, it looks like Trump just steering the world economy into the ground is on the table. That's a great bargaining position.

The Chinese President never needs to win another election, ever, neither for his own ego nor for the security of his dictatorial position which trump no doubt fantasize about during eac of his Big Mac fueled masturbation sessions.
The Chinese President just need to make it painful enough for trump to lose the election, and he will reap the fruit of having stared down the USA for the reminder of his president for life term.
