Indeed. You have a massive number of scholars who belong to different Islamic schools of thought; the most famous are the Sunni and the Shiite schools.
Every school has branches of variations, so for example, "Wahhabism" is branched from Salafi Islam, which belongs to the Sunni main sect.
Count how many scholars are there for every branch, then for every sect, then how many books were written to justify the beliefs of every branch.
It's a massive field of study. The 1 billion Muslims do not belong to the same thing; or else you wouldn't see them without an empire.
