Tragic, and ultimately preventable. Again, criminal negligence on the grandfather's part. Ownership isn't the problem, fucktards like that are.
Why was it loaded? Why wasn't it physically secured? Why wasn't the gun itself disabled?
There are many ways this could have been prevented, even ones that allow easy access.
This is my first thought for somebody who has children in the household:
