I mainly play those types of games to explore obscure dungeons and collect the best loot I can find. Perhaps that's why I found myself playing a lot less Skyrim than I did Oblivion, because they were very similar in those regards. I haven't played in quite a while, but I think it's time to return to Skyrim and pay more attention to the detail of the story and characters.
Don't get me wrong... Skyrim story is a major tone down from morrowind and oblivion. The main quest doesn't feel vital, and is self-important... the mages guild and 'fighters guild' very much feel like "I just joined, FIELD TRIP! Now I'm archmage.", and the thieves guild has you pledging your undeath to a Daedric Prince, and the fighters a werewolf.
The only 'guild storyline' that I believe is done justice is the Dark Brotherhood one, and I still have to laugh at the pointlessness that Astrid does.
Also, both sides of the Civil War quest are studiply polarizing. TT__TT
Please give me a home where cloud buffalo roam
Where the dear and the strangers can play
Where sometimes is heard a discouraging word
