The wife and I saw The Intern over the weekend. Her idea. I was hoping for Bridge of Spies but was outvoted 1-1, as husbands often are.
It was good in a predictable way, but some scenes stretched for too long. The whole time I sat there, I kept thinking, "When exactly did they neuter De Niro to make him so tame and audience friendly?" I kept flashing back to Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, and Raging Bull -- disturbing roles of fire and passion. Don't get me wrong. He was very good in this film, certainly the best thing about it. And I understand that people age, and he will never again see the kinds of roles he played in his prime. But seeing him play in support of Anne Hathaway made me a bit sad.
