Other civs can get antsy over just about anything. They covet your lands if you take the choice spots, you built wonders they wanted, you made friends with civs they don't like, or enemies of civs they do like. It seems to make a world of difference if you start on an island by yourself, or a continent with other civs. Then again I have made good friends with a neighboring civ in my Pangaea map, so you can at least have reliable allies. Just make sure to trade with them, and maybe send captured workers back to them, and so forth.
I have been debating with myself whether I want to build tall or wide. Tradition, or liberty policies. Or maybe if I choose Pangaea, I should juts go with honor to make sure my armies are up to par.
