Civ 5
Anyone else play this?

I was wondering what kind of settings people think are good. I tried playing my first game on epic timing, continents and large map size with lots of civs, but it was just going too slow.

I ended up changing to a small map, continents again and this time just did standard time. This one's been a lot more interesting so far. I'm playing as Alexander against a few other ancient era style factions (like the Egyptians and the Persians). It's pretty cool, I've basically got my own little peninsula which is connected to the rest of the continent by a thin strip of land. On the other side of that strip are the Persians, behind them are the Siamese. There's another little island that is right next door to me that has 3 city states, one of the states wanted me to try and take another city state, which I tried. Turns out it's a lot harder to take cities in this game than I thought. Anyone got any tips? I'm not really a civ noob, I know all of the general mechanics and I played a bit of civ 3 back in the day. I also played the shit out civ revolution on console. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone's got any info or things I should know about civ 5 when playing...

tl: dr Talking about civ 5, give me some pro tips.

Never played but I searched and it looks great to spend some free time. Maybe I'll download it, but I don't know if my laptop can hold on to it.

I've played with a lot of different settings. Big maps with epic time take forever. I usually play 4-6 civ maps, start in the Renaissance or later, and turn off all victory conditions except domination. I play mostly island maps as I like naval battles.

Taking cities - either rush them early before they get strong, or use siege units to weaken them until you can take them with ground units. Later, the strategy is similar, except you have more ranged units at your disposal and you can use privateers or destroyers on coastal cities.

I try to avoid conflict until I've got a very strong military, choosing instead to encourage conflict between the *other* civs.

What's it like if you do this? Do you start off with a small empire or do you start from scratch like if you were to start in the ancient era?

I've been playing this. I think I like Rome best, because of the bonus production to buildings already in the capital. Not to mention the legions that can build roads and forts.

Taking cities can be quite hard. You need some catapults, especially if the city has a wall. Ranged units are preferable. I would try waiting until you're out of the ancient age, so you can use cavalry, siege weapons, and better melee units.

Unfortunately even taking cities can cause a lot of unhappiness, which is another good reason to wait until you have mathematics. I'm not really sure that cutting a swath through the continent for a domination victory is all that practical, unless you really gear for it with policies and military related wonders.

I've played a while on two maps. The first was an Earth map, where I started alone in North America and won with a diplomatic victory. I was far enough ahead scientifically that a science victory would likely be easy as well. This was on easy, though.

My second was on a Pangaea map, because I wanted more conflict. It was on normal, and I've been struggling. Between being harassed by a strong military power, to having another civilization ally with most city states, and having money and happiness problems, victory isn't so sure. Diplomatic is not on the horizon, my military is struggling to push back against the one I'm at war with, and I'm not significantly ahead enough to be confident in a scientific victory.

I have started just after the ancient age as well sometimes. It's nice to have all of the most basic technologies out of the way. You also tend to start with a worker and an extra military unit, which is good.

You start from scratch, but depending on the era, you'll get extra settlers, workers and base ground units. You still have to build your cities.

I play Marathon Huge mostly Angel

I've started playing a little Standard Huge and Standard Large. Generally I just play tall and get a science/culture victory. I like to make saves late game in case I just want to hop in and start a war. Then I just wipe the map clean of civs.

Having different start era would definitely suit you I think.

I might give it a go, I'll try and finish the game I'm currently playing though. Those damn Persians are being prissy about me building too close to their borders. I might have to take 'em down a peg or two.

Other civs can get antsy over just about anything. They covet your lands if you take the choice spots, you built wonders they wanted, you made friends with civs they don't like, or enemies of civs they do like. It seems to make a world of difference if you start on an island by yourself, or a continent with other civs. Then again I have made good friends with a neighboring civ in my Pangaea map, so you can at least have reliable allies. Just make sure to trade with them, and maybe send captured workers back to them, and so forth.

I have been debating with myself whether I want to build tall or wide. Tradition, or liberty policies. Or maybe if I choose Pangaea, I should juts go with honor to make sure my armies are up to par.

I like tall because you don't have too much of a juggling act keeping happiness positive. You also just have to focus on keeping a few cities growing strong, with tradition you just keep units in your cities and you pay no maintenance. Only downside is that you can go the whole game and not really get into any major wars. Its good for the victory but waging massive wars is awesome.
