I think it's a realisation of your vast over-estimation of mankinds compassion, intellect or something similar. It's a daunting moment in which you think to yourself "how the hell are we ever going to sort out these problems when people are still thinking/acting that way O.o"
I guess it could be likened to having your optimism about the future torn to shreds in front of your eyes when you realise how much humanity on a large scale epic fails. It's a very George Carlin-esque moment when you say "okay, this isn't gonna go anywhere, I give up and have no stake in the outcome of this mess. Do what you want, I'm out"
