I guess it could be likened to having your optimism about the future torn to shreds in front of your eyes when you realise how much humanity on a large scale epic fails. It's a very George Carlin-esque moment when you say "okay, this isn't gonna go anywhere, I give up and have no stake in the outcome of this mess. Do what you want, I'm out"
I agree with this description completely, but wouldn't saying "I give up and have no stake in the outcome of this mess...I'm out" basically be adding to the already deteriorated state of things? It's like saying "I give up because everyone else gave up."
