I am reminded of my OBGYN who, 2 years ago, refused to perform a tubal ligation on me. He said I was too young at 24 to decide that I never wanted to have another child. Ugh. Even if I'm being rash. Even if I might regret something. As an adult person, I should be free to make my own choices and deal with the consequences however I see fit.
While I agree with that on principle - I can think of at least a few people I know, who I'm not so sure should be free to make their own choices. After all - we do force people by law to fasten seat-belts, wear motorcycle helmets and take other precautions they might - and often do - regard as unnecessary. Especially when the consequences may be borne not just by the person in question, but also their families and society/tax-payers.
There are no easy answers here, I'm afraid. If there were - we would have figured them out by now.
Of course - I do think the doctor, who refused the treatment you wanted was a dick.
