While yes it does take the "accountability" from the representative, I view it more as this issue is so divided and has far reaching impact that it must be left to the people to decide. How many issues or decisions are made by our representatives that we wish we had a say in? There are some bills that are passed that are widely unpopular but because the party of representatives has a majority it was able to pass. The system has flaws but I applaud the referendums that leave the decisions in the hand of the voters that are impacted as opposed to the representatives who "represent" themselves.
As I've said earlier, it goes both ways. There are times when the people should get to vote directly on an issue, and I think this is mostly for issues which are civil in nature and affect freedoms, because that way we don't have to wait for the government to catch up to a changing public morality. However, at the same time, there are issues which the public are uninformed on, and should not be able to touch with a barge pole. If we left trade negotiations up to public vote, the markets would likely all collapse. If we allowed people to vote on specific taxes, we'd end up in a tax-free society and millions would die. Some things are good for the country, and good for society, but extremely unpopular.
I agree. I used to think referendums were a no brainier. Then I realised how ironic that statement is.
Turning complex, crucial matters into a marketing campaign is a disaster. As we all just learned.
