Theo only thing which works for me the lifestyle diet that a dietician at the diabetes clinic worked out for me when I was first diagnosed . It's actually very simple; it's only a healthy diet. I REALLY don't need ANY white sugar or white flour in my diet. I DO need lots of fruit and vegetables. Simple it may be, but I find it very hard to undo a life time of poor eating habits. I HAVE managed to avoid fast food for about 30 years. Not for diet, I just thinks it's rubbish, and truly not fi for human consumption.
The diet prescribed to me is probably really similar to yours, though I am not diabetic. The USDA recommended diet is a bad joke compared to that diet: too low in protein, and way too high in carbohydrate and calories. They claim my maintenance calorie requirements are 2800 calories now; I can say with certainty that it *was* closer to 2000 - when I weighed 300 - and I have food logs to prove it.
