Once you've got a feel for it, riding a bike is easy. But when you're not used to it you're going to fall. It hurts worse to fall when you're an adult. Get one of those people who've been hassling you to learn to come out and hang on to your bike until you get the hang of it.
I had someone who HADN'T hassled me to help me learn. He was there with me on the wipe out and was not the cause of the wipe out, but helped me limp home and his wife took care of me. He's also basically a bike expert. I learned the basics of riding in three sessions - each about an hour. It's the rest of the practice I need.
I was going to fall at some point. I just chose a shitty place to do it, and next time we'll stick somewhere with fewer people and no gullies under the path.
