This wasn't public or terribly devastating - but it still makes for a good music party story.
Well, about 1985 . . . I was taking an electronic music composition class. I booked time in the school studio from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Heaven!
I had studied every piece of equipment in that studio, I knew exactly what modules I needed to set up, I had planned out which tracks I needed to record in what order and timed it out. (Um, this was before there was a computer in the place, OK? We're talking about two 4-track tape setups, banks of processors, and a Synclavier. The studio also had a huge Moog synth - which I would use in the next session.) I started working on the settings for each module and filter and pre-amp and reverb. Finally, after wasting an hour of my time, I went to the recording tech office and sheepishly asked for help. Reed was a good guy. He grinned, said "don't worry" and cheerfully agreed to check things out with me. He poked around for a while, hummed and hawed, and after about 3 minutes, pulled a rack away from the wall - - and plugged it in.
The missing lights on the mixing board lit up. Reed tried to tell me that people did this all the time, but I felt like -
