I sure that not every kid needs to be separated for the parent/adult that they illegally crossed the border with. That's just stupid blind application of some bureaucratic rule. But I'm also sure that some of the kids do need to be separated and there would be outrage expressed if they were not and then came to harm.
Same with the Portland/ICE thing. Not all need to be detained/deported, but some do.
The political polarization in this country is disturbing.
I don’t think anyone is arguing that there aren’t ever circumstances where it is in the best immediate interest of the child to be separated from the adults they came with. It’s the fact that Trump and Co. were separating them in ALL cases as a form of cruel punishment (and hopeful deterrent) for crossing the border. Intentionally, and unnecessarily causing emotional and psychological trauma to young children as a means to a political end amounts to child abuse, IMO.
