The reason why God gets all the credit is because religions like Christianity have this anti human stance that human beings are flawed, filthy, "sinful", cursed creatures and that the good things can only come from gods and angels. I mean this reminds me again of the last Russian Empress Alexandra who had that hemophiliac son so she spent most of her time living in Church and praying for him to heal. It never occurred to her that those "dirty", "stupid" and undignified peasants around her hold the key to her son's cure and that if she invested money in educating them they would find it.
Unlike today where people are more prone giving money to various foundations for finding cure instead of giving it to church and other religious orgs, so it is changing today with the rise of secularism.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
