Generally that was considered an honest answer - and border agents tended to believe it -- but unfortunately it was the wrong answer - and got the guy deported. He asked for evidence not story time with your imaginary experts and the evil clever migrant hordes coming to steal the jobs and "game " the system .
These people are ANYTHING but stupid. They learn fast. Word got around quickly - that if they answered " Asylum" - it gave them a fighting chance... If nothing else - they kept them from being stuck on the next bus south.
It also used to be mostly single males.
Then they found out that.women - and especially women with kids - rarely got immediate deportation.
Guess what? The single male is no longer the majority getting caught.
I would have put it in different words, but, yeah, i dont find an argument from anecdote very convincing regarding this issue.
