I live in the Dallas Metroplex. This story has been on the radio constantly so I hear parts of it on my drive to and from work. I have to say I am glad I was not on the jury for that case.
A couple days ago the radio station I listen to was playing Ms. Guyger's testimony and cross examination. It raised more questions for me than it provided answers. She said she was exhausted after a 13-1/2 hour shift. She was apparently so exhausted that she didn't notice she was on the wrong floor of the parking ramp - though she was surprised to get such a good parking spot - she didn't notice that the apartment she was entering had a red welcome mat at the door - obviously not hers. The odor of pot was wafting through the slightly opened door. She walked in and didn't notice that this apartment did not have her stuff in it. There was a black man sitting on the couch eating ice cream and she felt threatened so she shot him though she had other non-lethal items on her belt. Though trained to pay attention to detail she was so exhausted that she didn't notice any of the things that should have let her know that something wasn't right. She was not being attacked by an ice cream wielding psycho lurking in her apartment. This is someone trained to notice details and she missed some big ones.
She also stated that she was going home after this long, exhausting shift to change clothes and then drive into downtown Dallas to a gym to work out.
What?
I haven't heard anything that makes me think she set out to murder the victim, as in premeditated murder. However, she used deadly force when it wasn't necessary and a man is dead. There has to be some accountability.
Of course, word around here is the possibility of a coverup by the police so this story is far from over.
