And, frankly, if he at least gave a shit, you'd think he wouldn't have waited until a bit under 4 minutes after he lost consciousness to get up. If he gave a shit, don't you think he'd have (at the very least) gotten off his neck when it became clear he wasn't moving, when people in the crowd were going so far as to ask what his pulse was?
It might seem brazen, especially for an event that was caught on multiple cameras in front of witnesses, but, let's face it, cops tend to be given a LOT of leeway. In the years prior to the shooting, only 104 cops nationwide were arrested in connection with deaths they committed on-duty. And of those, only 35 were actually convicted, and only 4 of murder, and the maximum sentence in those cases? 16 years. Of course, 18 more were convicted of manslaughter, but their sentences averaged out to 5 1/2 years. It's also worth noting that, of the 104 officers to be arrested, 24 had yet to go to trial at the time of publication. The fact that a bit less than a quarter of these cops had yet to go to trial in this dataset that covered 15 years ought to show how rare it historically has been to prosecute a death done by a cop.
