It's my position that the christian churches (at least) are preoccupied with sex because it's a powerful form of social control. The church has always been about control and guilt.
The original Big Brother from Nineteen Eighty-Four. There's quite a lot written in that book about the Party's obsession with controlling sex, and why. Religions, by and large, do the same kind of thing as described in the book.
Of Course I've read 1984 and seen both films. ( The first one is better imo) In the book, Smith's girlfriend Julia is a member of the anti sex league. In the IT age that kind of control doesn't seem as fanciful.
