Because there seems to be an order in it resulting from underlying physical laws that operate consistently.
Things aren't always as they seem, and things that seem like something to you might seem to be something different to another person. He asked how you know the universe is the product of intelligent design. That means he wants you to provide evidence. I see that you, of course, have no evidence. I'm buckled over with shock.

Some people are not so self-obsessed that they would be opposed to xtianity merely on the grounds that it has harmed them personally.

What if you know about Jesus, but were raised Hindu, and believe Hinduism to be the one true religion? Would god send every Hindu to hell for simply believing what they were taught was true? If so, what merit does god find in a person who was born to xtian parents, and is only a xtian because that is what he was taught to believe is true? Are the Hindus supposed give up the beliefs that they and their ancestors have since around 1700 BCE? Why should they for a piddly little belief system that has only been around for a couple thousand years, and that has been the crux of so much death and destruction in this world?
Explain.
