Awards

We've got "Member of the Month" and "Post of the Month" awards here at AF... (which, I note, are a bit out of date).
These prestigious awards recognize the positive contributions of worthwhile members - yet, there is a group of posters who are disenfranchised by their ineligibility for these awards.
To rectify this situation, I propose the implementation of an AF "Kook of the Month" award.

It's not accomplished by vote, but I do have no idea why it hasn't been updating. It seems we're behind on that. Hopefully, one of the techies will pop in and tell you what's up. If not, I'll send out the bat signal.

The last "Member of the Month" I see was Min in September... Did I miss something?
As far as awarding a current member of the month - I would have trouble narrowing it down to just one, so I'll nominate a few for consideration. All of these members add to the value of the AF community in their own unique way:
Rhythm
DeistPaladin
thesummerqueen
aleialoura
Epimethean
There are many, many more who I'd like to include - but I forced myself to limit myself to five.
If we had a "New Member of the Month" (which I think is also a good idea), I'd make these nominations:
Norfolk and Chance
Ziploc Sunrise
Darwinning
For "Kook of the Month", we have the usual suspects along with a few recent contenders who've recently joined us. They all are self-evident and I'm quite sure I need not name them.

Seconded.
If my memory wasn't a total wasteland, I'd have nominations for PotM.

Adrian, thesummerqueen, and a few others, as well as myself, talked about some kind of awards thing on our google hangout for Hitch. We discussed all the different categories and such.
As far as member of the month goes, it's incredibly hard for me to think of just one to nominate because I enjoy most of you very much.

Cthulhu,
Designing and implementing not only the award but the logistics and qualifications for said award can be very time consuming. However, the members of these forums have the real power and if you truly want a new category of award you need to get many other members to back you under one unified idea. The problem of course is that many people probably have differing ideas about what would make a great award, and many other members don't care enough to get involved, and still others are too shy to let their opinion be know. You might be surprised how difficult this is to get people on board. Case in point, I had many more ideas for more unique and "fun" awards, but every idea has glitches and people who don't care for it. Which is fair.
That being said - have at it, if you are so inclined.
Cheers.

Thanks for the info, Cinjin. It's nice to know that members have a voice in how things are done here.
Consider this thread an open invitation for members to discuss thoughts and opinions on possible member awards, with the goal of determining which (if) any, have enough support to officially propose to the powers that be. After a discussion period of about a week or less, I'll post a proposal with an attached poll to show level of support (or lack thereof).
I offer two suggestions -
- Kook of the Month - an award of dubious distinction, awarded to the member deemed to have been most successful in defying all sense of logic and reason. Potential awardees to be nominated by members.
- New Member of the Month - awarded to a recent member who has made significant contributions to discussion at AF in their short time. Nominations for awards made by members, those eligible would be those who have started participating (determined by first post date, not join date) within the last two months, or since the most recent award (whichever is greater).
