My hell would be a consciousness for eternity. Especially if there were no pain, pleasure, struggle, sex, food, or lessons to learn. A place with no metal, soul, or blues music. A place without life. A place of eternal death, wrapped up to look like life, but void of the attributes that make life what it is.
Once life is over, I want it to just be over. I'm agnostic about an afterlife, but generally, I don't subscribe to the belief that there is one, due to lack of evidence, not only in regards to if it is, but also what it is.
I wanted to vote "lights out" but I voted that I wouldn't rule it out, but highly unlikely. With all the weird stuff we learn about the cosmos every year, you never know what's out there... our scientific knowledge is still infantile. Chances are against it, but who knows?

It's quite intriguing to read people's personalized hell. The idea of being stuck in your worst nightmare is scary to say the least - but it just further affirms to me that it is a method of social control.
It's also very interesting, to me, to see people's opinion as to what heaven would consist of. I never understood why humans had the audacity to describe paradise objectively, or even at all.
I do have a question though, and I apologize for getting off of the OP a bit here, but for those who answered the question - would you want to live forever (as in never die in the first place)? I see, multiple places, that once dead, people would want to remain 'dead', but if you were given the opportunity, would you continue to live indefinitely? Let's assume that everyone can too, just so you don't say no for the case of your loved ones who you would see pass away.

I like the idea to live an incredibly long life but not indefinitely. Also, an eternity in heaven will become a bore and you'll want to return to oblivion. Don't think anyone would REALLY want to continue for that long
Just a couple hundred years or more of living right here on earth. I want to continue far into the future, see many things and such.

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.
Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.
You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.
Same as Ace Otana. Would like a much longer life, but infinity would not be attractive to me. It'd be unlikely you could live infinitely anyway, as you'd eventually end up killed by something.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.
I actually voted for "reincarnation" even though I have no definite beliefs. Of all the possibilities of afterlife, I think it's the "most likely" since it fits with the cycles of life and death. It too has its problems, namely population fluctuation, but that might be solved if time isn't as linear as we think. All this is just speculation and we really don't know.
For those who didn't read the other thread, my idea of Hell is trapped in Dallas Texas for eternity, reliving my years as a student at SMU. That's it, really. No other torture is really necessary.

I think the main problem with reincarnation, Deist, has nothing to do with population and everything to do with the fact that we can't seem to find any souls to reincarnate anywhere we look......
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I'm reasonably sure that most cultures consider the soul to be essence rather than organ. For instance, the brain is organ and can be located, but someone's personality is considered to be more essence of that brain as a whole. I think that's the idea of the soul ... it is an essence of the body as a whole.
I too am a mild proponent of reincarnation, because of the cyclical nature of the universe. I voted the other way however, because the rational side of my mind still thinks that there would be very little reason for God to create multiple lives for the idiots that live on this planet.

Well, reincarnation is a pretty specific sort of belief. I've heard people talk about the energy and chemicals in their body moving back into the cycle and calling that reincarnation. That's not entirely accurate description of the notion of reincarnation, but it's a very poetic way to describe rotting away in a hole in the ground.
"Essences" are another fuzzy one aren't they? I wasn't aware that the prevailing theory and observations regarding our personalities had anything to do with "essences". Flowery language though, which is always nice. Perhaps even more so when dealing with death, as it's a difficult subject to handle for a great many of us for a great many reasons.
